Hi friends ππ»
Last Thursday I joined a a bunch of other nonprofit communications professionals for an in-person meetup here in Portland OR. (If you're here in Portland, join us next time ComNet PDX hosts a meetup! Get on the mailing list here).
Alongside the comms and marketing folks working in-house for organizations and consultants like me, there are always plenty of attendees looking for work, and it's a rough job market out there.
Between the funding uncertainty many organizations are facing, rising cost of living, and the continued return of in-office work, the deck is stacked against job-hunters.
In this week's email, I have some resources you can use if you're on the job hunt, or share with your network for your friends and connections who are searching.
All of us who are lucky enough to have steady income, from a salaried job or our own consulting work, need to be looking out for our friends that need help finding their next gig.

Updates to my list of job boards
First resource β my list of nonprofit-specific job boards. I have a guide on the Blue Hills Digital website with a list of websites that list nonprofit jobs, mostly here in the US.
Some are focused on remote opportunities or specific niches within the nonprofit sector, others have a wider list. I dug through the list of resources I often share with folks who are job hunting and added some new items to the list this morning.
Check out the Nonprofit Marketing and Communications Career Resources page here.
I also added a reminder to check your state-specific nonprofit organization, if you're open to local in-person work. For example here in Oregon, the Nonprofit Association of Oregon maintains a job board.
You can find your stateβs nonprofit association using the network map on the National Association of Nonprofits website.
Two recommended resources to read
The first one is almost a decade old, and has been sitting in my resources bookmarks for almost as long! When I opened it up, it still has solid advice.
βTop 10 Nonprofit Job Hunting Tips, from the Bridgespan Group, sounds like a bland listicle, but it has some good prompts in it to help you zoom out from the weeds of resumes and cover letters and think strategically about what you want.
For example:
- Learn who the key players are at your target organizations and find a way to get in front of them.
- Consider an interim path to your goal if necessary, such as consulting, temporary assignments, internships, or volunteering.
- When preparing for a meeting, think about the needs of the person youβre meeting with. Over time if you help your contacts, they will help you.
It's hard, emotionally, to network and try to make new connections when you're out of work. But that's what the folks who showed up at our local meetup last week were doing.
And it's a great time to try on consulting or freelancing to keep your skills sharp and expand your network. You might even realize working for yourself is a viable path forward.
βHow to Navigate the Modern Nonprofit Job Search is a more recent article from Nonprofit Quarterly that covers the specific pain points for job-searching in 2025. There are some simple tips that you might be able to leverage.
Good luck out there π€π»
